Investment background
Founded in 1997, Christchurch operates from units in a community setting, providing rehabilitation and high-acuity care to adults with neurological and spinal conditions resulting from injury, illness or disease. In 2010, the founders decided to retire and wanted a buyer that would build upon the high quality offering they had created. They chose Sovereign, and the Christchurch Group was established.
The growth story
At the time of Sovereign's original investment, the Group operated from adjacent facilities in Northampton in a community setting. With Sovereign's support Christchurch:
- more than trebled in size as a result of acquiring Birmingham-based Hunters Moor, opening full-service neuro-rehabilitation units in York, Harwell, and Lincoln, and opening a new step-down community facility in Bedford
- developed a transitional living space in Northampton, extending the care pathway
- expanded its services to include neuro-behavioural rehabilitation and specialist complex nursing including spinal injury rehabilitation, ventilated care and the management of progressive neurological conditions.
At exit, Christchurch Group was home to the largest multidisciplinary team in the UK, offering an award-winning specialist neurological rehabilitation capability, providing life-changing, evidence-based outcomes.
